| Jeff,
(the "J" in J&B Lowlines) was born in
rural New Jersey and raised a small herd of standard
Angus cattle
as a child. Beth (the "B"), was born and raised in
Minnesota, and grew up surrounded by the dairy industry.
A life long dream of owning a small ranch was realized
in 2003, 4 years after moving to Klamath Falls with
their family which includes 3 nearly adult children,
horses, dogs, and cats.
After being informed that horses, dogs, cats, and
children would not qualify as agricultural endeavors
for tax purposes, a start-up herd of Lowlines was
purchased with the intent of breeding them for sale.
The choice of Lowlines was easy; they are small and
well suited to thrive on marginal forage. They were
developed to be docile and easy to handle. Best of
all, they are Angus cattle and produce Angus beef.
The
start up herd of 4 fullblood cows and a fullblood
bull has grown to more than 25
animals, with more arriving every year. The herd now
includes fullblood cows and their fullblood offspring
plus half blood cows and their percentage calves. In 2007, we added 2 heifers imported from Australia to further improve our genetic base. The
original 65 acre ranch has expanded to include
another 80 acres that is in hay production.
J&B
animals are all selected not only for conformational
correctness, but for
disposition. Since the herd
is small, every animal is accustomed to being around
people and being handled. We feel that this makes
our Lowlines especially excellent candidates for
4H kids who are just starting out and would like
to have a 4H cattle project but are just too little
for commercial sized cows. We currently have a program
of gently halter-breaking all of our sale calves.
We are extremely proud of our animals, and thoroughly
enjoy talking about them and showing them off. We
do not claim to be the ultimate experts on the Lowline
breed, but we will do our best to answer any questions,
or direct you to someone who can.
J&B
Lowlines firmly believes that smaller cattle are
the wave of the future;
bigger isn't always better.
